General

For all Microsoft Server products one should note, that licenses server and client access licenses have to be acquired.

Windows Server 2008 R2

These editions of Windows Server 2008 R2 are available:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-based systems
  • Windows Web Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation

The license models differ depending on the edition.

The licensing of the accesses to Windows Server 2008 R2 are managed by client access licenses (CALs) which are assigned to a user or device. Accesses from external users can be licensed using CALs or external connector licenses.

The following client access licenses (CALs) are available:

  • Windows Server 2008 CALs
  • Windows Server 2008 Rights Management Services (RMS) CALs
  • Windows Server 2008 Remote Desktop Services (RDS) CALs (former Terminal Services CALs)

A Windows Server CAL is required for every using or every device of the department accessing the Windows server software directly or indirectly. This also applies for the access to Windows Server applications such as SharePoint server or Exchange server. In this case Windows Server 2008 CALs are required in addition to SharePoint or Exchange CALs.

Types of Windows Server 2008 CALs:

  • Device CAL: They allow any user the access from a certain device to instances of Windows Server 2008 R2 on licensed servers of the department.
  • User CAL: They allow a certain user access from any device to instances of Windows Server 2008 R2 on licensed servers of the department
  • External connectors: they are assigned to a certain server and allow any number of external users to access all instances of Windows Server 2008 R2 on the licensed server.

There are also device/user CALs for students in particular. The device CALs are only valid for devices which have been handed to the students for personal use (not for computer labs).

You can find further detailed information about licensing options from the "Whitepaper about licensing Windows Server 2008 R2" by Microsoft.

Exchange Server 2010

Exchange Server 2010 is available in these editions:

  • Exchange Server 2010 Standard
  • Exchange Server 2010 Enterprise

The edition of the server license refers to the scalability of the server software (number of databases).

A licensing of accesses to Exchange Server 2010 is conducted using client access licenses (CALs), which are assigned to a user or a device of the department. Accesses from external users can be licensed using CALs or external connector licenses.

The following Client Access Licenses (CALs) are available:

  • Exchange Server 2010 Standard CALs
  • Exchange Server 2010 Enterprise CALs

The CAL editions refer to the functionality which is accessed by the CALs. Please note that one can either license the standard CAL or both standard CAL + enterprise CAL. Standard CAL and enterprise CAL are not alternatives but complementing.

Types of Exchange Server 2010 Standard/Enterprise CALs:

  • Device CAL: They allow any user the access from a certain device to instances of Exchange Server 2010 on licensed servers of the department.
  • User CAL: They allow a certain user access from any device to instances of Exchange Server 2010 on licensed servers of the department
  • External connectors: they are assigned to a certain server and allow any number of external users to access all instances of Exchange Server 2010 on the licensed server.

There are also device/user CALs for students in particular. The device CALs are only valid for devices which have been handed to the students for personal use (not for computer labs).

In addition to the Exchange Server access licenses a Windows Server 2008 CAL is required for each user/device since Exchange is a Windows Server application.

Further information about licensing options can be taken from "Licensing for the company intern usage of Exchange Server 2010" by Microsoft.

SharePoint Server

SharePoint Server 2010 is only available in one edition:

SharePoint Server 2010

The licensing of accesses to SharePoint Server 2010 is conducted via client access licenses (CALs) which are assigned to a user or a device of the department.

The following client access licenses (CALs) are available:

  • SharePoint Server 2010 Standard CALs
  • SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise CALs

The CAL editions refer to the functionality which is accessed by the CALs. Please note that one can either license the standard CAL or both standard CAL + enterprise CAL. Standard CAL and enterprise CAL are not alternatives but complementing.

Types of SharePoint Server 2010 Standard/Enterprise CALs:

  • Device CAL: They allow any user the access from a certain device to instances of SharePoint Server 2010 on licensed servers of the department.
  • User CAL: They allow a certain user access from any device to instances of SharePoint Server 2010 on licensed servers of the department

There are also device/user CALs for students in particular (so far only for Version 2007). The device CALs are only valid for devices which have been handed to the students for personal use (not for computer labs).

In addition to the SharePoint Server access licenses a Windows Server 2008 CAL is required for each user/device since SharePoint is a Windows Server application.

Further information about licensing options can be taken from "Licensing of Microsoft Server in Server CAL Model" by Microsoft.
