AFS for Mac OS X

You find the software and instructions for the installation of AFS for Mac OS 10.8 (MountainLion) here. The .zip archive needs to be unpacked with a doubleclick.

AFS Software für Mac MountainLion [1]

The following instructions will guide through the installation of AFS for Mac OS 10.05 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard). In case that you have an older AFS version installed, we highly recommend deinstalling the old version and rebooting your system afterwards. Please use the following Perl script for deinstallation:

uninstall.command [2]
(MD5 Sum: 94fc1586bc803d6126d143b8647ffe07).

tubIT provides a setup file which is adapted to the version of your OS so that you are only required to run the file. The packages will install AFS 1.4.14. Please note that the "installers" are simple scripts which may overwrite data without query.

In this procedure a system file will be overwritten with the configuration necessary for the use of AFS. The file is /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos. [3] If you have made any changes here on your own, you can restore these from the backup file /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos.bak. [4] This file will be created during setup.

In addition the file /var/db/openafs/etc/CellServDB will be overwritten. The new will only contain the AFS cells of TU Berlin because the large amount of cells which are stored by default can lead to problems with the AFS service.

For the installation of OpenAFS please one of the files for 10.5 or 10.6:

tubit-OpenAFS-Leopard.app.zip [5]
(MD5 Sum: 0fce5be0fad686bb394ec65c77b332a3)

tubit-OpenAFS-SnowLeopard.app.zip [6]
(MD5 Sum: cb3d9d049678ff9f2d73fbd70b4957e4).

Unpack the downloaded file and run it.

If you are using an account without administrator rights (which is recommended), you will be asked to enter the credentials of the system administrator. These are required to write the system files and install the kernel module. A window will pop up showing the progress of installation and any errors. After completed installation you can simply close the window.

OpenAFS installs a plug-in in the system configuration which allows you to adjust all OpenAFS settings comfortably. Please use this plug-in to check the installation.

Alternatively you can use a sFTP program like Cyberduck (http://cyberduck.ch) in order to establish a connection to sshgate.tu-berlin.de. Since sshgate has mounted AFS, it is possible to access the AFS storage via sFTP. This does not require the AFS software described above.

Another alternative is the access via web. Navigate to https://webafs.tu-berlin.de [7] with your browser. Log in with your tubIT account.

If you encounter any problems, do not hesitate to call me (Karl-Heinz Müller, Tel.:24235, E-Mail: mueller@tubit.tu-berlin.de).
