Files can be recovered on the TSM client which is also required for backup. This can either be done manually by the system administrator or automatically using the TSM server initiated by the central tubIT administration. It is possible to recover entire directories as well as single files. The files can either be recovered to the original folder or to a seperate folder allowing the local administrator to copy them back to the correspondent folder.
TSM client versions
There are 2 versions of the TSM client. A command line version and a GUI version. The command line client is suitable for all automated backup and recovery procedures. The GUI version is suitable for manual backups and especially for manual recovery. Since both versions are based on the same configuration files the functionality is identical.
Client, server, tape library
The recovery can be initiated by a system administrator at any time. The client establishes a connection to the server which will provide the data. Since the data is swapped to tapes, this can take some time. If all tape drives are already in use, the process will be delayed until resources are available.
Recovery by tubIT
Data which is part of tubIT's backup can only be recovered by tubIT. If a recovery is necessary, tubIT has to be informed. The data will always be recovered to a seperate directory from where it has to be copied back to the original folder. As soon as the data is available the responsible users will be notified. For AFS data this is either the affected user or for departments the person in charge as known by tubIT.
